ABSTRACT

With informed strategic planning, innovative thinking and thoughtful investment, digital and the technology that enables it, can create a sustainable and resilient organization that ensures a greater level of equity, continued relevance and greater impact to a larger more diverse audience, and a positive effect on our bottom line. This chapter explores the digital mindset and ecosystem under which digital innovation needs to thrive, to create an institution that is nimble, opportunistic, entrepreneurial, innovative and relevant. It introduces a mature definition and philosophy of digital. While many regard it as a combination of social media, a website and some in-gallery digital media, it is something much more. It is foundational organizational principles and philosophies that seek to build capability throughout an institution and across staff, and strategies to meet the evolving expectations of our audiences. The Covid-19 pandemic exposed the fragility of the museum business model, our reliance on a single revenue stream, and exacerbated it.
