ABSTRACT

Over the last three years, the Lubbock Lake Landmark, an archaeological and natural history preserve in Lubbock, Texas, has expanded interpretation and accessibility through digital initiatives and in-gallery interactives. The Landmark has taken a broad understanding of accessibility, and utilized a phased, multiprong approach to address inclusion. This approach has included the design of digital products, content as a means to expand inclusion, tackling technology access barriers, community programs to increase comfort with technology, and access to collections. These five criteria formed the design basis for the Landmark’s new mobile app. The Landmark app is presented here as an innovative approach to inclusion in digital interpretation in a setting with limited resources. While accessibility is never considered final, the adoption of this inclusive mindset has allowed the Landmark to expand how it conceives and addresses its community.
