ABSTRACT

International research on gender equality in academia focuses to a small extent on male dominance in artistic academic subjects. The present study is based on statistics from the Nordic Institute for Studies in Innovation, Research, and Education (NIFU), which indicates women’s and men's career development in Norwegian higher music education. The chapter analyzes data that shows the imbalanced gender distribution at six higher music education institutions in Norway, and discusses art-specific challenges with special focus on vertical and horizontal gender segregation in the field. The data, from 2009, 2014, and 2017, points at slow changes. More knowledge is needed about what the specific barriers are, and what measures may have a more sustainable effect on gender equality in academia and beyond.
