ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses pilot residential projects implemented as part of the Laboratory of Architecture 60+ (LAB 60+) initiatives. LAB 60+ is the first organisation in Poland to have adopted an innovative approach to design in the context of the needs of an ageing society. Poland is an ageing country that is experiencing demographic change at a faster rate than are other European Union countries. By 2050, the number of Polish older people will be more than double the number of working-age people. Accordingly, it is necessary to investigate and introduce a variety of functional housing solutions, including through the renewal of existing housing resources. This chapter analyses three housing project case studies, which have been developed over three years in different Polish cities by LAB 60+. The design and governance of each of these projects was heavily guided by an age-friendly lens as relevant to Poland’s ageing society.
