ABSTRACT
Although Switzerland is not a member of the EU, nor has ever voted on whether to join, it possesses ample experience with direct-democratic expressions of support or rejection for European cooperation and integration. Against that background, this chapter analyses 11 different Swiss referendums on separate but related European questions held between 1992 and 2018. The data analysed consist of the results at the municipal level. The purpose is to distil some key insights for the post-Brexit UK, in particular, and the relationship between supranationalism and direct democracy, more generally.
