ABSTRACT

Should the African church be involved in business and wealth creation? This is an important question for the church. Many local and national churches in the African continent have had to struggle with issues related to financial sustainability and how to create income so as to remain viable. The church here is faced not only with changing economic trends but also with inherent challenges of fundamental beliefs related to money. This chapter is aimed at challenging many assumptions concerning faith and business. The central challenge seems to be rooted within Christian doctrine and with ethical issues, which in many cases provide clear answers for leaders of the Christian church concerning engagement with business and the creation of wealth. Most churches including global Christian umbrella bodies like the World Council of Churches have largely been silent in offering social or economic guidance on wealth creation and business, except for giving consideration to economic equality and development, as reflected in its publication Wealth Creation and Justice. May this chapter bring provocation to thinking and doctrine on the matter of wealth creation.
