ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the role of U.S. imperialism in fostering political unrest in Central American countries in the last several decades and highlights New Testament parallels to such imperial intervention. The chapter argues that, given its own complicity in the crisis, the United States has a moral obligation to receive more refugees and asylum seekers who are fleeing war in their homelands. Building upon a Christian ethic of solidarity with displaced people, the chapter calls for refugees to be treated with dignity and highlights the adverse consequences of demonizing refugees. The chapter argues that there is much to gain—economically and politically—by welcoming and integrating them into the society as full-fledged participants in U.S. society.
