ABSTRACT

Sustainable development is viewed as a development process that is compatible with ecosystem. The pressing needs to address the global social problems and environmental challenges has led to increasing interest in social entrepreneurship. In this chapter, we provide insights into the role of social entrepreneurship in sustainable development. It begins with unravelling the concept of sustainable development and the global challenges of inequality, poverty, hunger, and access to health, education, biodiversity, and climate changes and the emerging practices in social entrepreneurship for addressing these challenges. Drawing insights from these emergent practices and the lessons learnt from these practices, this chapter highlights that social entrepreneurship is evolving as an alternative to the current development process and contributing to sustainable development.
