ABSTRACT

Communication is an important tool for achieving sustainable development. Community radio (CR) facilitates horizontal communication where members of the community participate and engage in the overall functioning of the radio station. It stands in sharp contrast to commercial and state-owned radio. Community radio gives space to multiple voices, which results in a plurality of ideas and views. Along with disseminating information and accommodating multiple voices, it also has the potential to shift the unheard or unreported voices from the periphery to the centre of developmental discourse. Based on the case study of four community radio stations, this chapter analyses the role of community radio in achieving Sustainable Development Goals by bringing positive change within the community. The chapter concludes that community radio as an inclusive and plural media has the potential of playing an important role in sustainable development.
