Learning from the South

In this chapter, I try to show that the Western critical tradition is undergoing a deep crisis and that social struggles in the global South, if adequately evaluated, may help us to develop epistemological, theoretical, and political alternatives to keep alive the non-conformism vis-à-vis an unjust world which lied at the root of the critical tradition. The idea that there is no global social justice without global cognitive justice is central to the chapter. I identify some of the alternatives by suggesting two types of intercultural translations, both of them involving the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi, North-South translations, and South-South translations.
