ABSTRACT

This chapter offers a methodological review of social-mediated crisis communication by discussing three important topics in the growing interdisciplinary realm. First, I review emerging measures of key theoretical constructs, such as crisis responsibility attribution and crisis information engagement. Second, I discuss the social network approach, highlighting its potential for a more holistic understanding of the interrelationships among various organizational and individual actors as well as information flows on social media. Last, I review opportunities and challenges related to the computational methods, emphasizing their use for large-scale data collection and automated content analysis. Recommendations are prescribed for more valid, open, and reproducible research and practice.
