ABSTRACT

When we set out to write a conclusion for this volume on gender futurity, as a site of potential liberation and possibility, we were focused on what was missing from the research on gender non-normativity: pleasure. Gender research that focused on the dysphoria, pain, shame, and terrifying experiences of trans and non-binary people saturated the literature until recently when scholars began to focus on shifting narratives of gender to what was possible when we choose to unapologetically live in our bodies. As we bring this volume to a close, we want to theorize from a place deep within our own pleasure centers, unattached to scholarship and rigid notions of what is, but rather what could be, if we hone in on our intuitive needs to feel good, free, and purpose-filled in our pleasure. In this final conversation, we conceptualize gender futurity from a place of pleasure and freedom. We begin with a question. Who would you be if you were invited to express your identities in ways that please you?
