ABSTRACT

Impact estimates play a key role in deciding how we award funding and tenure, which articles get published in the most prestigious journals, which fields are funded, which universities are “better,” and how the public and policy makers understand research. How this happens and to what degree depend on our perspective. Our measurements and conclusions reflect the type of research being conducted, as well as the sector, what we’re measuring, who is doing the judging, and the metrics used. The misuse of these measurements can also have an impact, distorting our publishing, funding, and even our research decisions. Because of this, a number of efforts are happening today that may change how science impact is measured in the future.
