ABSTRACT

This chapter examines intersections, opportunities and implications for social justice in relation to the three cross-curriculum priority (CCP) areas in the Australian Curriculum for Foundation – Year 6. Identified as (1) Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures, (2) Australia and Australia’s engagement with Asia and (3) sustainability, the three CCPs are designed to inform a “relevant, contemporary and engaging curriculum” that builds on the educational goals of the Melbourne Declaration on Educational Goals for Young Australians. Underpinned by two goals, the Melbourne Declaration values the role of education in building a democratic, equitable and just society. Goal 1 relates specifically to the role of schooling in contributing to a “socially cohesive society that respects and appreciates cultural, social and religious diversity”, with Goal 2 referring to outcomes for students such as becoming “active and informed citizens”.
