ABSTRACT

The episode entitled “The Abominable Bride” of the acclaimed BBC Sherlock series was somehow a disappointment to many viewers – it was deemed a failure by many in its attempt at transposing a series otherwise set in the 21st century back to its original 19th-century context. This chapter discusses the approach articulated in the episode by pointing to a 21st-century reading of stereotypical 19th-century concerns, and by suggesting that the relevance of this new reading lies very much in a redefinition of seriality on the basis of (assumed) discontinuity.
