ABSTRACT

This chapter brings together reflections regarding neglected and underutilized species (NUS) in Brazil, discussing the historical context of the use of these plants in this type of a continental country, which has enormous biodiversity and great cultural diversity. Some of the most significant work undertaken to spread the knowledge, to rescue and promote the use and conservation of NUS – nowadays popularly known in Brazil as “non-conventional edible plants” (“PANC” in Portuguese) – is highlighted in this chapter, as are issues related to agroecology, climate change, urban agriculture, local production, nutrition, gastronomy and food sovereignty.
