ABSTRACT

This chapter details the experience of an IFS Clinical Consultant providing consultation to the members of the Black Therapists Rock (BTR) community. BTR has a unique relationship with the Internal Family Systems Institute (IFS-I). Both organizations are committed to the training of Black therapists in the IFS therapeutic model. The author provides a description of BTR and the relationship between BTR and IFS-I. This chapter delineates the process by which Black therapists and members of the BIPOC population are introduced to Internal Family Systems therapy and encouraged and supported as they participate in a Level 1 training either as students or Program Assistants (PAs). Due to the healing nature of this model, it is viewed as a game changer in the treatment of trauma experienced by Black people. The chapter presents ways to adapt the model to better meet the needs of Black clients. Case vignettes are also included to illustrate how to work with consultee parts that undermine therapy work with clients.
