ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the environmental legacy of the 2016 Olympic Games on the Guanabara Bay watershed, which is home to a population of 8.5 million in 16 municipalities. The goal is to give details about the results of the policies, agreed between the Brazilian government and the International Olympic Committee, through some criteria as standard of governance, participation/social inclusion, environmental quality, ecotourism and public health. Therefore, we establish a balance between the advances and frustrations of some of the key Olympic environmental promises. The analysis shows that unrealistic goals for sewage treatment in addition to inefficient and ineffective political leadership led to disappointing results. However, there were some positive outcomes, most notably the strengthening of the Watershed Committee.
