ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the exchange of experiences between Rio and other cities during the mega-events’ calendar. Given the aim of elucidating the recent exchange of public policies and the results carried out, the chapter is divided into six central axes, each presenting some cases of interest, namely, culture, sanitation, urban mobility, security, entrepreneurship and income policies. The goal is to highlight some relevant public policies to better understand the window of investment opportunities opened by the Olympic cycle in Rio. The lessons taken from the 1992 Olympics cultural program and Rio2016 cultural legacy is the first case studied. Then we discuss policies to tackle sanitation issues in Rio, such as those focused on the Guanabara’s Bay or the public–private partnerships throughout the city. In mobility, we focus on commuting time and Rio’s unique inter-city transport card, in addition to the implementation of the Bus Rapid Transit system. Regarding security policies, we monitor the performance of the Pacifying Police Unities, a policy imported from Bogotá. Entrepreneurship in Rio and the exchange of microcredit experiences are also investigated. An assessment on poverty and the synergies between income policies closes the chapter.
