ABSTRACT

The structure and content of a player's training and match activity has implications for the individual's fitness and fatigue response and, ultimately, their readiness to perform. Monitoring fatigue is an important consideration for rugby players, with tools such as athlete-reported outcome measures, blood, urine and salivary markers, heart rate variability, neuromuscular function and performance tests discussed. Important considerations for assessing a players’ adaptation to training are also considered. Finally, measurement approaches for ensuring practitioners can make meaningful interpretations of data are presented.
