ABSTRACT

Businesses contribute to biodiversity loss with their impacts on ecosystems, yet they also rely on nature for their operations, making them dependent on biodiversity. At the root of the biodiversity crisis are five drivers of biodiversity loss, identified by the IPBES: changes in land and sea use, direct exploitation of organisms, climate change, pollution and invasive species. This chapter presents a case study which explores corporate facilities’ proximity to areas of biodiversity significance based on if they’re in protected zones, as one indicator of business impacts on biodiversity. Biodiversity loss is a growing concern for policy makers and regulators around the world. It builds on the research shared in the DNB report, providing an analysis of 720 companies’ proximity to protected areas, as a proxy for areas with high biodiversity significance, based on the location of their corporate facilities.
