ABSTRACT

Green bond issuances have more than doubled from 2014 to 2019. Much of the green bond research focuses on financial features of green bonds with an emphasis on developed economies and large issuances in emerging markets. The World Bank Group considers green bonds a vital component of the transition to a low-carbon economy. The green bond research has 4 focus areas, namely: macroeconomic conditions affecting the green bond market and its growth determinants, green bond pricing with a primary focus on the ‘green bond premium, risks that issuers are attempting to remedy, and the environmental integrity of green bonds. South Africa has devoted considerable attention to codes on corporate governance which call for the concurrent management of economic, environmental and social issues. It has played a leading role in the development and application of integrated thinking and reporting in an effort to promote more socially and environmentally responsible business and advance sustainable development.
