ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines how investor engagement with companies is a key means by which biodiversity loss can be halted and reversed. It highlights the reasons why biodiversity should command more attention from investors, followed by a section that introduces our expectations of companies along the dimensions of governance, measurement, targets, strategy and disclosure. Companies’ relationship with nature can be characterised by impacts and dependencies. A priority for many companies will be to improve the understanding of the company’s relationship with nature. Once a company has identified its material dependencies and impacts on biodiversity and ecosystem services, it will be able to design impactful interventions to enable it to have a net-positive impact on biodiversity. While biodiversity and ecosystem services form the basis of our economies and societies, they remain overlooked as key value drivers and risks by companies and their investors.
