ABSTRACT

This chapter seeks to provide an overview of all the areas of the financial markets where initiatives can be, or are being, implemented to prevent extinctions and biodiversity loss, as well as setting out our Species Protection Action Plan for the Financial Markets. It begins by considering the burgeoning financial market for ratings, indexes, tools, methods being developed and/or in use for measuring biodiversity, or at least for attempting to assess the impact of biodiversity decline and species loss on financial markets, as well as the impact of financing, investment and business activity on biodiversity and species. The recent Dasgupta Review on ‘Finance for Sustainable Engagement with Nature’ discusses trends in public and private finance towards a more proactive approach to nature.
