ABSTRACT

There is a common saying that ‘the people only understand the value of something when it is gone’. Measurements provide the reader with quantities but not with the necessary context to inform a decision. There are many people around the world who have already recognized that valuation will play a significant and foundation role in the protection of biodiversity. Both the Natural Capital Coalition and the Social and Human Capital Coalition developed strong foundations, built broad and diverse communities, and spearheaded global programs to ensure that the value of nature and people sit alongside financial value in the minds of decision-makers at all levels. Going forward, a capital’s approach will play a significant part in our struggle to avoid extinction. They are in part all right, but it will take a systematic approach to transform the way that decisions are made and save the reader from extinction.
