ABSTRACT

The Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) is a non-governmental, non-profit, conservation organisation, founded in 1973, and operating throughout southern and East Africa. The EWT communicates the principles of sustainable living through awareness programmes to the broadest possible constituency for the benefit of the region. The world of risks and opportunities within which businesses operate is rapidly changing. Companies are facing increasing pressure from consumers who want to know that they are dealing with responsible corporate citizens, and the impact that companies have on biodiversity has become a critical element of this. Accounting for biodiversity from a business perspective has been the focus of recent academic research and practitioner work, alongside efforts to integrate biodiversity considerations within institutional investor engagement. Specifically, it helps provide guidance on how to measure change(s) in the state of impacted ecosystems and species and value these impacts in qualitative and quantitative terms.
