ABSTRACT

The catastrophic decline of nature has now been widely recognised as evidenced by agreement among geologists that we have entered an age of mass extinction due to human activity. Many places that are rich repositories of biodiversity are also experiencing massive scales of species extinctions. For business, the case for action has been framed around the economics associated with the climate crisis and more recently the biodiversity crisis. A proper accounting framework for contributions from business needs to be at the fore of this so that extinction mitigation becomes a core part of the strategy and execution that businesses carry out. For those businesses that are based on products or services that are a direct threat to species, understanding their impact should lead to a desire to transition their model to a more sustainable one.
