ABSTRACT

Heal is a young UK-based social enterprise offering a species recovery solution – rewilding – organised in an innovative way: it is the first charity in Europe, possibly the world, dedicated to being a rewilding landowner, with a business model built on financially sustainable operations that includes engaging with the financial markets in new ways. In shaping Heal as an organisation, the founders were acutely aware of the acute sense of anxiety and powerlessness amongst individuals around the climate emergency and biodiversity loss. The nature-driven basis of rewilding has also fed into new hypotheses on the composition of landscape habitats. Inspired by rewilding success stories in the UK and mainland Europe, the Heal team have modelled its rewilding approach with a focus on the English lowlands.
