ABSTRACT

The chapter’s main objective is to analyze the main characteristics of the transition process and the gradual increase of the Chinese presence in Latin America, particularly in some sectors such as the mining and energy industries. The consequent displacement of United States Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the region and how this translates into political terms. The analysis highlights the precepts of the Dependency Theory to explain the new scheme of external dependence center-periphery of Latin America with respect to China and underlines the main challenges for the region in this incipient scheme of economic and political dependency.
