From the 1920s to 1970s the music called jazz generated a meteoric and metaphoric succession of idioms genre tags: New Orleans jass, big band swing, bebop, Afro-Cuban, hard bop, cool, modern, “free” aka “avant garde” aka “the new black music” aka “fire music.” The forms of Black pop music that had evolved since swings postwar sunset were also multifarious and included gospel, doo wop, rock & roll, rhythm and blues. The cities of Cincinnati, Memphis, Detroit, Chicago and Philadelphia spawned local recording industries that went global and dominated the field throughout the 1960s and 1970s with iconic hit-making lead singers, soloists and groups. Morris can then take the group off into other mesmerizing areas of exploration. Twenty minutes may pass in which a wealth of new rhythm, melodic and orchestral ideas can develop.
