ABSTRACT
A basic canon of science is that its methods be replicable. If scientists employ independent variables that they cannot specify (preferably quantitatively), then their findings cannot be related to other findings or principles and thus cannot contribute to the body of scientific knowledge. If scientists use methods to measure the dependent variable that are not generally available to other scientists or are not explicated satisfactorily, judging the validity of the findings they report is difficult.
