ABSTRACT

In the first and most extensive part of his essay “Leaving the World Good or Leaving a Better World,?” Aldo Milohnić analyzes Brecht’s response to the social and economic crisis during the transition from the 1920s to the 1930s using the example of his remarkable play Saint Joan of the Stockyards. Then in the concluding part he focuses on a possible post-Brechtian response to our current situation, in a time defined by the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as economic, ecological, and other global disasters. According to Milohnić, if it is lucidly adapted to our current turbulent times, the Brechtian dialectical method is still one possible progressive performing strategy, as the most successful representatives of the post-Brechtian paradigm in contemporary European theatre clearly show.
