ABSTRACT

How does the collaborative innovation strategy evolve in conjunction with modularity thinking? This section first discusses the background of modularity on technology innovation of global manufacturing, and then proposes a system model of collaborative innovation embedded with platform-based modularity thinking. The evolution stages of Haier’s collaborative innovation strategy are respectively crossed. Some observations are found: both product modularity and organization modularity can be utilized to adjust collaborative innovation, while platform-based modularity can not only help realize the “side-by-side” collaborative innovation, but stimulate the incentives of partners in terms of sharing internal resources. In that regard, more scale and innovative commercial values can be cultivated and incubated under user demand-driven scenarios.
