ABSTRACT
This introductory chapter contextualizes the contributions to the volume by (1) considering them against the background of recent developments in philosophy and the sciences focused on understanding the social foundations of human cognition, and (2) situating this work within a line of intellectual development in the history of philosophy centered on understanding human beings as norm-governed rational animals.
