ABSTRACT

Out-of-class language learning constitutes an important context for language learning. This introductory chapter explains what we mean by language learning and teaching beyond the classroom (LLTBC), by comparing it with the terminology used in prior literature. We propose LLTBC as the broadest term and the one we adopt in the Handbook. We also lay out the three objectives of our book: to enhance conceptual clarity on issues related to LLTBC, to accumulate the insights into how LLTBC may be shaped by external forces and be supported, and to provide a collection of innovative methods in researching LLTBC.
