ABSTRACT

The real-world, narrative nature of the Critical Incident Technique (CIT) makes it a good match for social work research, and many thousands of citations are testament to its capacity to withstand the test of time. Juxtaposing the benefits of CIT with the challenges of contemporary practitioner research, this chapter proposes a digitisation of CIT methodology, using audio diaries, to extend the scope and counterbalance some limitations. Drawing on an evaluation of a CIT/audio-diary study across a range of social work settings, the chapter outlines the enhancements which both bring to the methodological marriage in social work research.
