ABSTRACT

Will Baxter was born in Grimsby in 1906. He graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 1929, and qualified as a Scottish Chartered Accountant in 1930. From 1934 to 1936, Professor Baxter was a Lecturer in Accounting at the University of Edinburgh. He then moved to the University of Cape Town as Professor of Accounting where he remained until 1947 when he took up his Chair at the London School of Economics. He held this position until his retirement in 1973 as Emeritus Professor. In 1945 he graduated at the University of Edinburgh as Doctor of Philosophy for his thesis on the House of Hancock. Professor Baxter is well-known for his scholarly contributions to the areas of accounting theory generally and income determination particularly. His major written works include Depreciation; Accounting Values and Inflation; Studies in Accounting Theory; Collected Papers on Accounting; and Depreciating Assets: an Introduction.
