ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the existent research on advocacy and how to integrate professional and client advocacy into master’s and doctoral curricula. Professional and ethical mandates emphasize the critical role of advocacy and situate the need for counselor educators to actively foster the development of advocacy consciousness and competence. Transformational learning constructs and their resonance with advocacy competence is provided as a foundation for developing effective curricula. CACREP standards for each of the entry-level core areas and for doctoral preparation are provided as a framework for understanding learning outcomes related to advocacy across curricular domains. Recommendations for syllabus construction and integration of advocacy competencies into class assignments are provided for the following curricular domains: Professional Counseling Orientation and Ethical Practice, Social and Cultural Diversity, Human Growth and Development, Career Development, Counseling and Helping Relationships, Group Counseling and Group Work, Assessment and Testing, Research and Program Evaluation, and Doctoral Preparation. Across the chapter, specific curricular assignments will be overviewed that integrate transformational learning strategies to optimize advocacy consciousness and competence.
