ABSTRACT

Leadership is central to professional counseling and counselor education. This chapter is about foundations of leadership from the broad perspective of leadership theory. The chapter’s purpose is twofold: first, to firmly ground the reader in leadership theory and philosophy and, second, to use this grounding as a foundation to showcase leadership perspectives from professional counseling. The reader will find that professional counseling’s developing philosophy of leadership is consistent with many theoretical leadership concepts that have been found to play a large role in effective, successful leadership across a range of disciplines and settings. Special focus in this chapter will be on Chi Sigma Iota International, among other leadership organizations from professional counseling, and their strong commitment to the service leadership model. The chapter concludes with some ideas for emerging leaders in professional counseling and how they can use theory to expand the pursuit of leadership excellence.
