ABSTRACT

If professional counselors are to do good, we must be able to practice. It cannot be taken for granted that we have the right to practice. In fact, counselors have repeatedly faced challenges that have limited our ability to practice. Counselors must advocate for our profession like we advocate for our clients. If we do not, we risk losing our ability to advocate for our clients and do good. In this chapter, professional advocacy and its importance are discussed. Successes and challenges the profession still faces are addressed. Counselors are called upon to engage in professional advocacy and suggestions for how counselors and the profession can move towards elevating the profession are discussed.
