ABSTRACT

Human sexuality is an integrative part of Christian spirituality because sexuality “expresses a person's innermost being and our human quest for meaning”. This chapter examines four spiritual paths that emerge as queer Christians attempt to integrate their sexuality into their spirituality in non-affirming Christian churches. It aims to classify their spirituality into four spiritual paths: the spiritual path of self-denial, the pragmatic spiritual path, the monastic spiritual path, and the holistic spiritual path. The chapter explores queer Christians in Indonesia by queering and highlighting the resources that can help them to address their struggles to reconcile their faith and their sexuality. It—attempting to grow spiritual insights for liberating spiritualities—draws for queer theologians such as Marcella Althaus-Reid, Mario Ribas, Hugo Córdova Quero, and Patrick S. Cheng, among others. The chapter offers acumen for queering the praxis of Christian churches and the place that Indonesian queer Christians may carve for themselves.
