ABSTRACT
In this chapter, we provide a brief overview of the athlete selection process in the four major North American professional sports leagues (National Basketball Association, National Football League, National Hockey League, and Major League Baseball), which takes place through an annual event called the “entry draft.” This is followed by a detailed review of the literature examining the accuracy of selection in each league, as well as the common challenges and errors that hinder decision-makers’ ability to forecast future performance. Last, this chapter offers numerous solutions to counter such challenges and enhance the efficacy of entry draft selection.
