ABSTRACT

Bertha Chan Hiu Yau is one of the very few fat acceptance and body positivity advocates in Hong Kong. Struggling to reach the “healthy” weight and BMI for her whole life, she faces discrimination in many aspects of her daily living. Be it finding a job, looking for a spouse, or finding clothes to wear. Everything is telling her, she is abnormal, being a fat Chinese woman in Hong Kong. She is either not thin enough to be normal, not fat enough to be plus size, or not fit enough to be called curvy; but from the doctor’s point of view, she is obese in Hong Kong. At the same time, she is considered of average size in the West.
