ABSTRACT

If the American war movie is therefore part of an industry of mythology, this may be no surprise to students of Hollywood, who have long been familiar with the notion of the Californian ‘dream factory’. But Hollywood Remembrance and American War have much more to teach us about the current state of that nexus of fantasy and ideology, and its engagement with war cinema becomes a special prism. In launching a critical challenge to one of the most powerful mythologies of the contemporary culture industry, then Hollywood Remembrance and American War is essential reading for students and scholars of the politics of culture in our world today. In this sense, the chapter offers a vital contribution to academic memory studies, seeking to untangle and analyze the narrative strands of history and fiction that come to be knotted together in our mediatized imaginary life world.
