ABSTRACT

This chapter attempts a subaltern history of English language teaching or ELT at the University of Delhi (DU). It expresses a view from below as seen by those tasked with teaching English language, rather than from the point of view of the policymakers, against the backdrop of developments in the field within India. In doing this, it highlights the very problematic relationship that the two “Englishes”—literature and language—have had for some teachers who wish to serve the cause of language teaching more. It documents the role played by such dedicated scholars, teachers, colleges, and teachers’ association in making ELT a viable, respectable component of English curricula and pedagogy in DU.
