ABSTRACT

This chapter analyzes an online graphic novel, Rodong Simmun, created by a North Korean refugee to remove cultural barriers between North Koreans and South Koreans. Data sources include visual stories, audience comments, and newspaper articles. The Critical Literacies Advancement Model (CLAM) (Robinson, 2020) and cross-cultural literacy (Arvizu & Saravia-Shore, 1990) are used to analyze how the visual narratives incorporate cross-cultural literacy to promote positive social change. The analysis reveals that Rodong Simmun helped to develop the audience’s knowledge of cultural and linguistic differences through accessible sources by way of humor. The study underscores the potential for using popular culture in informal adult education for positive social change.
