ABSTRACT

For some time now, gender issues in literacy and learning have featured prominently in global education research. This chapter draws attention to how gender literacy can effectively challenge systemic oppressive structures that disadvantage individuals based on their gender identity. It explores gender literacy as a critical literacy, asking the question: How does gender literacy relate to social justice and in what ways can gender literacy help advance and promote positive social change? In responding to these critical questions, the discussion is framed using the Critical Literacies Advancement Model (CLAM) (Robinson, 2020) as an organizing tool to distill the ways in which gender literacy serves as a mechanism for promoting diversity, gender equity, and inclusion in an effort to advancing a social justice agenda.
