ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we define equity literacy and explain the need for equity-minded adult educators in higher-education settings in the United States. Educational development is promoted as a vehicle for addressing this need. We argue that culturally responsive teaching, a strategy for promoting equity literacy, is necessary for educators to ensure success in learning among diverse populations. We identify institutional, instructional, and individual barriers and challenges faced when adopting equity-minded practices. Finally, we pose educational development as a solution to consider and identify characteristics and strategies of centers for teaching and learning that support the development of equity-minded adult educators.
