ABSTRACT

A device with internet connection; a social media account (Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter). Participants should choose two songs from a list provided by the instructor or select two songs of their own choosing to compare and contrast as works of art meant to convey gender, race, ethnicity, or other identities in popular culture. The facilitator should challenge participants to consider how gender, race, ethnicity, or other identities impact our modern-day morality tales in pop culture. Then, the instructor should facilitate a class discussion soliciting feedback on how the participants felt about the changes and use the opportunity to critique common stereotypes, gendered roles, and what popular culture can do to promote equity and social justice. While this activity is aimed at developing equity literacy, it has implication for identity and cultural literacies, as these skills should support the development of equity literacy.
