ABSTRACT

Mass media connects the world more than ever because of digital communication. While media offers venues for access to information and freedom of expression, concerns about media abound, particularly because of social hegemonies. This chapter uses a critical lens to explain media literacy, its impact on adults, while focusing on civic engagement and its potential to advance social justice. Cultural and global contexts of media literacy are also explained. Educational strategies for teaching media literacy to adults in nonformal settings are provided. The chapter also recommends ways that adults can leverage their media literacy to become more engaged global citizens and work for social justice.
